The villages of Catliffe and Treeton stared at each other over the valley. There was no love lost between the Sheffielders and the Rotherhamites, years of local rivalry put paid to any chance of ' live and let live'.

Some perceived slight about rude messages in the laundry hung out by the Treeton ladies had so inflamed the Catliffe Red Column(CRC) that revenge needed to be dished out.

They knew that the menfolk of the village could be out on some mischief so tonight was a good night to attack. Dragging Big Betha, the Vickers gun, behind them the Red Column set off. Leading were the most hot blooded of the men real firebrands, who were carrying petrol and explosives stolen from the nearby quarry at the news of Parliament dissolving and Moseley taking over.

The ladies of Treeton were aware of the risks, each night when the men had gone our foraging, a watch was set though most of the women slept.

Meanwhile along the quiet country roads a convoy approached at high speed. A group of Royalist foragers were taking a short cut home after raiding a large farm complex just over the border in Derbyshire

As the CRC close on the village the men's nerve began to fail even with the reassurance of Inspector Muldoon and his local bobbies who ' would see that 'the right evidence was gathered and then hidden'.

Aggie Braithwaite was freezing, huddled in the telephone box she only had Digger her greyhound crossed whippet to keep her warm. On such a dark night it was hard to see anything but she could make out the helmets of the bobbies and then heard the sound of a lorry engine. She quickly rang the local exchange and was able to rouse he sleeping operator. @bobbies is about our Esmerelda and there's some posh lorries coming down the road.

Aggie then ran as fast as she could to the safely of the village. Inspector Muldoon halted his men and prepared to face the trucks which stopped just out of rifle range and out jumped a lot of men in uniform. This wasn't the rag tag villagers he had expected to fight.

Fearing the road blocked the Royalists formed up to fight there way through they outnumber the troops they could see and quickly brought up their mmg. This would be no problem.

AS they advanced the re was an exchange of rifle fire doing very little damage to either side and both sides rushed to bring up their machine guns. All chance of sneaking up had gone and the CRC s left flank decided to run towards the building. The first section entered the closest building without opposition. The plan was to smash the place up and the place and let the explosive lads bllow holes int the next terrace and generally torch the place.

However the smell of hot food from the house stopped them in their tracks and they settled down for a reet champion feast. Meanwhile the really keen explosives men were having a bit of a wobble and even with the help of old Al Elstone who had been the leader since the start, they refuse to advance. Finally the smell of food wafted towards them and they reluctantly set of. Sadly for them it was the wrong decision as the now aware ladies opened fire from the first floor of the house across the street. On one man was hit but it set of the explosives he was carrying and the rest were pinned down with bits of their friend floating down onto them

Meanwhile the Royalists realised that in their haste they had forgotted the ammunition for the machine gun and their leaders group was hit badly leading to him legging it shouting for his nanny.

As the tried to cross the road there were more casualties and they decided to find an easier way home.

Freed to advance the Police attempted to get into the house infront but were rebuffed and the well fed section got caught in cross fire and were almost wiped out. At this point everyone went home. Williamina Atherton organised a clean up operation and by the time the men got back there was little to be seen of the action. 'Whats that burn on the road our lass?@ said her husband 'oh just some young firebrand from Catliffe, he won't bother us again''

Played as ever at Sheffield and Rotherham Wargames club, my thanks to Bill, Jon and Mick for participating and making it a great night.

Sorry I missed this one
With all the talk of helmets I am surprised someone didn't have a fit.
