Greetings VBCW hive mind.

I'm currently running a VBCW campaign set in Dorset and the New Forest. The campaign has reached early March 1938 and the factions are arming themselves and spying on each other, although no oine has yet come to blows. The north of the county and Wimborne are in AL hands, while Dorchester, Bournemouth and the New Forest are in government hands (Dorchester is Royalist, Bounemouth is Fascist and the New Forest is heading towards feudalism under the banner of the English Array). Poole is currently neutral, although they have raised militias, backed by the town's TA.

To add spice to the campaign, I'm adding in occasional external influences (Reds on the Solent starting to caunse problems for the New Forest, orders from the Bishop of Salisbury, etc.).

Just over the Somerset border is Yeovil which, for my campaign purposes is government/fascist held, but the countryside north and west has become 'bandit country', in which the SFF operate. Only a few miles south west of Yeovil is Sherborne, from where the Bishop of Sherborne leads the AL in North Dorset.

My question for you, is what you think would be happening in the Yeovil area. The town is fairly isolated, with only the following resources:

Population: about 21,000
Politics Conservative - for campaign purposes reas pro-govermnent/fascist
Military Resources:
1 company Poilce Auxiliaries - mostly tied up trying to control countryside and keep in check locals with pro-Anglican sympathies
2 companies LDV - undergoing training
Westland Aircraft Limited - one militia company raised from company workers. Also several Lysander aircraft (first production rin for RAF)

Biggest problems are lack of fuel and lack of communications/supply lines with pro-govermant areas.

Attacking the town of Sherborne is not a viable target to attack, as the town has TA artillery and sufficient militia and school OTC to repel an attack, as well as allies militias in nearby Dorsat towns.

Please give me ideas as to what you think would be happening both in Yeovil and in the nearby countryside.

The Somerset levels are almost impossible to cross once the road bridges are destroyed. The IRA used to partly destroy the bridges so only foot or horse carts could cross (so the locals could still get about), then ambush Government forces sent to rebuild the bridges. Two SFF commanders serviced in Ireland and are known to use IRA tactics.
The countryside to the south of Yeovil is criss-crossed with big hedges and would make an attack from there very hard. But this countryside also works against a defender as their patrols can be ambushed and an attacker sneek close to the town.
I would try and force the Government forces to leave by cutting them off and not letting them be reinforced/supported.
If the Anglican League attacked from Sherborne I think they would try and cut Yeovil off from the rest of Somerset by closing the roads. Then ask the Government forces to leave so as not to make lots of civilian casualties.

Hope this helps.

Sherborne was created in1925, as a suffragan of Salisbury. Those towns & parts of the Forest which were in Hampshire until the 1970s, were and are part of Winchester Diocese.
Salisbury Diocese covers Old Dorsetshire (before it expanded in the 70s) and Wiltshire.

Perhaps these would be Amalgamated Engineering Union men, veterans for the Great War; not revolutionaries or communists, just wanting to be left alone Mosley's thugs and wanting a proper elected govt back. So they form a platoon/company (depending on the size of the workforce) to defend their homes and place of employment from the BUF. To the local Blackshirts, this is the same as armed rebellion, so tensions and conflict starts to develop.

And of course the Foresters (from the Test, North of Pool Harbour & joining The Chase at the A338 ) - - would have taken the line 'this is ours - keep out, whoever you are'

Thanks Mort

That makes sense. I think the government forces in Yeovil may soon be requesting help and supplies from Dorchester (who have a full battalion of TA plus a handful of tanks scavenged from Bovington). This would be a good challenge for Dorchester, as they would have to cross a 'no man's land' controlled by militant Dorset Clubmen.

Remember that there is also an interesting dynamic with Bishops & Dioceses. In 1938, some Dioceses were very new. Portsmouth (including the IOW) had only just been split off from Winchester (1927). This may lead to an insistence on difference, or closer ties.
Lords Spiritual (Bishops in the House of Lords) are the two ABs plus the three senior Bishops (London, Durham & Winchester), plus others in order of seniority. So exercising leadership in in the Province would be an interesting mix of ego & status.
