Hello I have just joined the forum so do not know whether this has already been posted.
In 1938 a group of observers from the Mass Observation project Went to Bolton, Lancashire (and Blackpool during Bolton Holiday week). One of the observers was the photographer Humphrey Spender. Many of his photographs, including street scenes, can be seen here

I hope that this may prove of use and/or interest.
